10:00-10:30 – Introductions
Although UGA is not a Google Apps for Educators (GAFE) school, many of our surrounding school systems are. Fortunately, we are still able to use many Google tools in our own professional work and in our classrooms. Using these tools can make our work lives more efficient and our students better prepared to work in local schools. Seriously – Google Forms are life changing.
This workshop is different in that you will be working at your own pace, on goals you set for yourself. Some of you will want to work through all three levels of certification AND apply to be a Google Certified Innovator. Others might want to take this semester just to know the first level well. You DO NOT have to take any of the certification tests – that is entirely up to you. Our expectation for this course is that each of you will accomplish whatever goal you set for the workshop and you’ll share your ideas for using Google Tools with the rest of us. We also hope you’ll share how you are using these tools at the ITT Conference in October. Most importantly, we hope you’ll find tools that will be useful to you for research, teaching, and service.

10:30-11:00 – Goal Setting
We’ll take a few minutes to talk about the different levels and watch a short overview. Then, you’ll complete a quick survey (using a Google form, of course) to set up some goals. You can always change your goals later.
11:00-12:00 – Getting Started
We’ll get started on your first set of goals and see how far you can get today. You might surprise yourself. Access the Google Training Center here.
12:00-12:30 – Lunch and Learn
Lunch and Digital Learning Day. Today is Digital Learning Day – with a focus on digital equity in American schools and communities. We’ll take a break and watch a live broadcast from UNC-Greensboro about digital equity and teacher preparation. (You can see more Digital Learning Day events here.)
12:30-1:00 – Preparing for March

One of the things I’ve learned during our workshop is that while it’s all well and good to talk pedagogy, you still have to talk about tools. It’s like talking algebra without talking about multiplication tables. You have to have a good balance of both. So, I’d like to end our workshop with some time spent on some specific tools that might be useful in K12 and higher ed classroom settings.

For the remainder of today’s session, we’ll talk about progress towards workshop goals and how we can help you complete your project.

In the spring, all student teachers will have access to a series of videos, newsletters, online resources, and email/social media support to promote technology integration in K12 classrooms. Today – we have the opportunity to steer that really big ship.
Each one of us will take one of the 5 ISTE standards for Teachers and think about what activities, teaching approaches, etc. might reflect that standard. What is it that student teachers should know and be able to do related to that standard? What practicing teachers do we know that embody one or more of these standards?

We’ll also explore two tools: Periscope and Voxer (because we have to learn at least a few new tools this semester!)
And we’ll spend our final hour working on our own projects.
Our 4th and final meeting will be held from 10:00-1:00 on November 11.
At our last meeting, we talked about the Horizon Report for Higher Ed and K12 and shared our ideas for personal interest projects. We also spent some time looking at Genius Hour and how that format might help us with some exploration of teaching and learning in our own classrooms.

Today we’ll spend some time exploring BYOD and Flipped Classrooms – two terms that apply in both higher ed and K12 classrooms. What can we do and what tools are available to make the most of these two ideas?
BYOD classrooms: how do you have students incorporate their own devices into classroom activities? What types of devices do students have? What would you like students to be able to do with their devices? What are some causes for concern?

Welcome to the Fall 2015 session of the ITT Academy!
Our background text for our sessions will be the New Media Consortium’s 2015 Horizon Report: Higher Education Edition. You can access a PDF here. Some of you might also want to refer to the K12 Edition.
We’ll take some time to introduce ourselves and talk briefly about trends we find interesting in the Horizon Reports. This will help us to organize the topics we’d like to discuss for the remaining ITT Academy sessions.
Each of our 4 sessions will be divided into 2 distinct activities – discussions of K12 and higher education trends that are of interest to the group and time to work on and share personal interest projects using the Genius Hour model. Our goal for this Academy is to finally put into practice that one thing that you just haven’t had time to get around to trying.
The Genius Hour model is just one way to support projects of personal interest to a learner. Additional Genius Hour tools can be found here.
Take a few minutes to write a 3-5 sentence description of your genius hour project. We’ll share these with the larger group.
